Calendula has been used medicinally for centuries all over the world-The calendula is an annual flower native to the northern Mediterranean countries. Its name refers to its tendency to bloom with the calendar, usually once a month or every new moon. The term “marigold” refers to the Virgin Mary, and marigolds are used in Catholic events honoring the Virgin Mary. The Egyptians considered them to have rejuvenating properties. In the Hindu world, the flowers were used to adorn statues of gods in their temples, as well as a colorant in food, fabrics, and cosmetics, and of particular interest, in the 18th and 19th century, calendula was used to color cheese. The calendula was originally used as food rather than as an herb. It adds flavor to cereals, rice, and soups. The petals can be added to salads. As recently as 70 years ago, American physicians used calendula to treat amenorrhea, conjunctivitis, fevers, cuts, scrapes, bruises, and burns, as well as minor infections of the skin.

Wishbone Medicinals- made in Portland-available in our apothecary
S + F stocks a worn-wood shelf’s full of healing herbal products. Each product aids a holistic approach to well-being and are wildcrafted through the knowledge and positivity of herbal artisan Claudia Coleman and co. My most recent obsession? Wishbone medicinals’ lavender sage oil. Both lavender and sage offer topical healing properties. In the past week I have applied the oil to bug bites, sun-dry elbows and a river rock scrape. Lavender is also one of the most powerful aromatherapy tools available. A little lavender sage oil applied to the temples remedies tension headaches. I could elaborate on lavender’s healing properties but, perhaps, it is best discovered first-hand. Wishbone Medicinals also offers tinctures and salves. Befriend your digestive system with a burdock and dandelion root tincture. This soothes your digestive lining and provides a boost of potassium and iron. Healing chamomile, calendula and rose blends are available in concentrated salves…
Basically, there are so many ways to take care of yourself. Wishbone gets it. Come explore the entire line on our medicine shelf.-Elissa Hall
